Chapter Thirty-One

‘Betsy, my life has just imploded. We have to warn Essy.’

‘I agree. You go and speak with Essy. I’ll remain here and gather more information.’

I nod. How much more do we want to know? I then concentrate on Essy and mist.

My world has fallen on its axis. Right, this minute, I think of my biological mother. It goes to show we never knew her. She’s been undercover all this time. Oh, my poor father. I wonder if he ever suspected?

Essy is with my husband, speaking to him in my old bedroom in my parent’s penthouse apartment.

What in the world am I going to do? We have to get Jax out of here. I grab her attention and tilt my head toward the door. She nods in understanding.

“Jax, I’ll be back in a minute. Gotta go to my old room to grab something.”

“Okay. I’ll be right here,” he sarcastically says.

As soon as she steps out of my old bedroom, she heads to her old bedroom, straight to the ensuite, and turns the tap on.

‘Laini. You’re finally back,’ Essy says, a little snippy.

I shake my head. ‘Sis, remember I love you.’

Essy frowns. ‘What has happened?’

‘Essy, I need you to move Jax to somewhere safe with our children.’

‘Laini, what are you talking about?’

‘Trust me on what I am about to reveal.’

She nods. Her face changes to her old FBI persona. ‘What did you learn?’

‘If I said our mother has been working fully undercover since before she married Dad, what would you say?’

‘As I said. What did you learn? And what do you mean, our mother has been undercover?’

‘Just that. Our darling mother is part of the Apolo Syndicate.’

Essy shakes her head in disbelief. ‘Huh. How? I didn’t see that one coming.’

‘Yeah. Not what I wanted to discover listening to our mother speaking with Pedro Apolo. Otherwise known as Uncle Pedro to me. Grandfather to his family. Or to our mother, Papa.’

‘Oh, my hairy monkey balls.’

‘You can say that again. Our so-called long-lost family wants Jax dead. If they had known Bella was Jax’s daughter, mother would have had me terminate the pregnancy when I was seventeen.’

‘Holy shit. Seriously.’

I nod. ‘What is our next step?’

‘Thankfully, I had arranged for the children to go to the park.’ Essy pauses. I can see the moment she comes up with an idea. ‘We’ll all go into hiding. Our parents do not know everything about us.’

I nod and reply, ‘Thank goodness for that.’

‘I’ll have Dekk’s jet on standby. The only thing I don’t know is our destination.’

I nod. As long as we can get away from here and everyone is safe. ‘Essy, Pedro Apolo, and mother said Jax is from a mafia family. So had his ex-wife.’

‘Oh, my. This day just keeps getting better.’

My sister shakes her head, pulls her cell from her pocket, and makes the necessary phone calls. The first one was to one of her employee bodyguards, who is acting as a nanny for our kids.

“Hello, Jasmine. Code pineapple. This is not a drill. You are required to keep the kids away from the apartment complex.
